The U.S. Customs announced that it would impose a 10% tariff on cross-border e-commerce packages exported from China, and cancel the tax-free policy for packages with a value of less than $800 under the T86 mode under section 321. This news was like a bombshell, instantly throwing the entire industry into chaos.

However, just when industry practitioners were overwhelmed, good news came. On the morning of February 7, Eastern Time, the White House website issued a notice to suspend the ban on canceling the tax-free package channel for Chinese goods. This means that Chinese e-commerce packages entering the United States can still temporarily use the original T86 customs clearance mode and continue to enjoy the tariff exemption policy of less than $800.

This notice undoubtedly injected a shot of adrenaline into the Chinese cross-border e-commerce export industry, which has been in a mess recently, and provided a solution for the packages backlogged at major ports and warehouses, and also won a valuable buffer period for the entire industry.
Although the suspension of the new policy is good news, in the long run, the US's intention to suppress China's cross-border e-commerce export packages is already very obvious. This time, the customs has not yet found an effective means of supervision and the system is not well prepared. For cross-border e-commerce sellers, they must not take it lightly and should make full use of the window period of the suspension of the policy to accelerate the adjustment of the business model.
